Senior Citizens & Pensions

Seniors

Information about ageing in Denmark, about pensions, care for seniors, how to spend your time in an active way and stay healthy.

For senior refugees and immigrants: Brief information about your rights and possibilities

Dansk Flygtningehjælp (The Danish Refugee Council) and Ældre Sagen (DaneAge Association) publish this booklet with the purpose of providing information about rights and possibilities for you as a senior citizen of Denmark. We have done it because we think more information is needed, and because we would like to draw your attention to the various activities for senior citizens arranged by Dansk Flygtningehjælp and Ældre Sagen.

The booklet deals with the following subjects:

  • An active everyday life
  • Pension and economy
  • Assistance in everyday life
  • Senior housing

You may not find an answer to all your questions about senior life in Denmark, but hopefully get an idea about your rights and possibilities.

If you need further advice, your local municipal authority can help you, or you can contact one of the advice centres listed at the end of the article.

Your pension scheme

This is how you are insured before and when you retire

Each month, your employer pays part of your salary into a pension scheme. The size of the amount depends on the collective agreement at your workplace. As a general rule, your employer pays 2/3 of the amount and you pay 1/3.

Most of your pension contributions go towards your pension, butyour pension scheme also includes an insurance which covers next of kin in the event that you die before retirement.

Your pension scheme savings can be paid out if you travel back to your native country and take up permanent residence outside Denmark. However, you will be required to pay a 60% duty to the Danish state. Call us on 7012 1330 and we will help you to have your savings paid out as quickly as possible.
